NSTOY 2009 Conference Chair Sherri Gould ME 05 would like everyone coming to the conference to remember to bring items for the Silent Auction.  The proceeds are a primary source of funding for the NSTOY Scholarships.  TOYs who cannot attend are urged to send a contribution made out to the NSTOY Scholarship Fund to Carol Strickland KS 99, NSTOY Membership and Finance Chair, c/o National Teachers Hall of Fame, ESU Campus Box 4017, 1200 Commercial, Emporia, KS 66801.

Faye Shaw FL 71, NSTOY Scholarship Chair, recently announced three NSTOY scholarship winners.
Tyson Bendzak, son of Trudy Bendzak AK 75 and Jerry Bendzak AK 84, will be a senior at Pacific Lutheran U, Tacoma, WA;
Jamie Lancaster, granddaughter of Cindy Lancaster WA 90, will attend Utah State U, Logan, UT;
Aimee Nicole Roddenberry, daughter of Jean B. Lamar FL 09, will attend Florida Community College Jacksonville, FL.

NSTOY is looking for a state to host the annual conference in 2011.  Two states may choose to co-host like KS and MO did in 2007.  If you’d like to explore the possibility, please contact Art Peekel IL 92.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan spoke in Chicago on June 19.  The occasion was the release of the report of Advance Illinois.  Among those who created this report on education were former office holders IL Gov. Jim Edgar, Speaker of the U.S. House Dennis Hastert and U.S. Secretary of Commerce William Daley, as well as Joe Fatheree IL 07.  Highlights of the event are on the website advanceillinois.org.  You can find a link to the report at http://www.advanceillinois.org/filebin/pdfs/wecandobetter_2009.pdf.

Norm Conard KS 92 is the Director of the Lowell Milken Center/Irena Sendler Project-Life in a Jar in Kansas.  The Center promotes the mission of teaching respect and understanding throughout America and around the world through educational projects that feature unsung heroes as role models to "repair the world."  More information on the Center can be seen on the website:  www.lowellmilkencenter.org  The Life in a Jar play is being performing all over the world and will be in PA, WI, IN, MO, KS and FL over the next year.  Several books are being written about the Life in a Jar project and Ms. Sendler.  To learn more about the project and story of Irena Sendler go to the following student web site:  www.irenasendler.org

Concern and Congratulations for TOYs and Family Members:
If the name of a person from last month’s “Concern” list does not appear here it is because there has been no significant change in the person’s condition.  Please keep them in your thoughts.

Bruce, husband of Betty Amos KS 84, had a second surgery for liver cancer.  “He looks great and feels good,” said Betty, but he’ll soon start his third round of chemotherapy.

KAPPA DELTA PI will hold its Biennial Convocation Oct. 29-31, 2009 in Orlando, FL.  NSTOY Board members will be the guests of KDP, give a workshop and hold its semi-annual board meeting there.  NSTOY is a chapter of KDP and TOYs are encouraged to join at the special rate of just $19.00.  Check out the website at: http://www.kdp.org/
